This is a three cylinder locomotive, 22" x 30", 60" drivers, 265 lbs. psi boiler pressure, 120" x 85" firebox, total wheel base of 85'4" weighing 379,000 lbs. (engine only) and capable of 71,000 lbs. tractive force. The tender has a capacity of 16,000 gallons of water, 18 tons coal.

Soo (Minneapolis, St. Paul, & Sault Ste. Marie) number 4001 at the B & O Chicago Terminal roundhouse. The locomotive has 27" x 30" cylinders, 69" drivers, 200 lbs. psi boiler pressure, 344,500 lbs. weight without tender and produces 53,900 lbs. TE without booster, 64,620 with booster cut in. The engine is used primarily for passenger service but does handle freight as well.

One of the largest Mountain types in the world, Wabash engine number 2821 is pulling a Labor Day Special consisting of 18 cars nearing the B & O Chicago Terminal crossing at Forest Hill (75th Street near Western Avenue) Chicago, Illinois. The fast "Banner Blue Limited" of the Wabash at the outskirts of Landers Yard, Chicago, is being pulled by engine 2820 at 12 O'clock, noon, on Labor Day, September 4th, 1933. Engineer Dempster of Decatur, Illinois, standing in the left gangway, was responsible for the fine smoke effect in the photograph, as it was made by previous arrangement with him.

Great Northern number 2516 is taking water at Minneapolis, Minnesota. This engine is equipped with a large Vanderbilt tender, mechanical stoker, and Walscheart valve gear. The engine was built by Baldwin.

The "Maple Leaf Limited" crack train of the Grand Trunk Western Railroad is passing the 47th Street Station of the Chicago and Western Indiana Railroad, in Chicago. Engine 6040 is equipped with a Vanderbilt tender, Elesco feed water heater, and a mechanical stoker. This engine was also built by Baldwin.

A fast freight of the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago, & St. Louis Railroad (Big Four) is passing through Marion, Ohio behind engine 6221 on the Indianapolis to Cleveland run with 78 cars. The locomotive is classed L-2b by the railroad and specifications include 27" x 30" cylinders, 69" drivers, 60,620 lbs. TE (83,020 with tender booster cut in). Cylinder horsepower: 2952. Boiler pressure: 225 lbs. psi. Engine weight is 364,000 lbs.; the tender weighs 283,500 lbs. and holds 15,000 gallons of water and 21 tons of soft coal.

Fast Baltimore and Ohio express speeding through Tokama (North), Maryland behind 5550, a large Mountain type. The locomotive is equipped with a Vanderbilt tender and a water tube firebox.

Union Pacific engine 7863 at the Los Angeles, California Union Station on the point of "The Los Angeles Limited." This engine is equipped with a Young valve gear and was built by Brooks in 1923. Loco specifications include 29" x 28" cylinders, 73" drivers, weight of 338,000 lbs. without tender, and 54,838 lbs. tractive effort.

New York Central Railroad number 2737 at Albany, New York. ALCO built this locomotive and it is equipped with an Elesco feed water heater, stoker, and a booster engine.

A later 4-8-2 of the New York Central is seen pulling a 110 car fast freight at Forks, New York near Buffalo. Engine 2853 has an automatic stoker, booster, and a Coffin feed water heater. ALCO built this locomotive.

Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific, engine 4055 is at Kansas City, Missouri. This engine is used in Southwestern passenger service. It is an oil burning ALCO equipped with a Coffin feed water heater.

Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific number 4061, a large Mountain type, is at Peoria, Illinois awaiting the arrival of ex-President Hoover's private train from Chicago. This ALCO is equipped with a Coffin feed water heater and a mechanical stoker.

The New York, Ontario, & Western 4-8-2 number 403 at Middletown, new York. Equipped with an exhaust steam injector, this engine was built by the American Locomotive Company (ALCO).

The crack "Golden State Limited" of the Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific, is crossing the Pennsy diamond at Englewood Station, Chicago, Illinois. The engine is number 4059, a large Mountain classed M-50 by the railroad. ALCO built this locomotive. It is equipped with a Coffin feed water heater and a mechanical stoker.

Oil burning engine 4324 of the Souther Pacific is undergoing steam tests at Los Angeles, California. This is an ALCO locomotive.

Great Northern's oil burning 2501 was built by Baldwin in 1923 and is classed P-2s by the railroad. The engine was rebuilt with a booster engine and Vanderbilt tender. It was photographed at Portland, Oregon.

Two large oil burning 4-8-2s lead by engine 3710 are pulling the "Grand Canyon Limited" of the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fe on a grade near San Bernardino, California. Baldwin built both of these locomotives.
