Used in fast freight service, this locomotive has 28"x30" cylinders, 74" drivers, 250 lbs. boiler pressure, 150.0625" x 102.5" firebox grate area, and a 90' 8.5" overall wheel base (engine and tender). The unit weighs 806,400 lbs and produces 67,500 lbs. of tractive effort.
Southern Pacific's oil burning number 4401 was built in 1930 by Baldwin. Classed GS-1 by the railroad, it has a Walschaert valve gear and a large vanderbilt tender. The boiler carries 250 psi boiler pressure. The locomotive is pictured at Portland, Oregon in 1932.
Canadian National's 6124 is a large 4-8-4 seen on a Sarnia fast freight near Niagra Falls, Ontario, Canada. The loco has the typical CN Vanderbilt style tender, automatic stoker, and an Elesco feed water heater.
